The hut consists of two-story buildings.
The ground floor, with a paved terrace, houses the bar and kitchen, while the upper floor features a cozy dining room.
The second building, set slightly further back than the first, is instead exclusively used as a dormitory with bunk beds and wooden flooring; the rooms can accommodate up to 10 people.
A little above this building is the helipad for helicopter landings.
The hut is equipped with a small hydroelectric turbine capable of providing “clean” electricity and heating for the buildings.
The two huts forming the alpine pasture are located on the right bank of the Flua stream, near the rock face supporting the massive lateral moraine of the Sesia-Locce glacier.
The exact construction date is unknown and no written records exist, but the position and the rich pasture suggest ancient origins, likely dating back to the early 1700s.
In 1966, the CAI Vercelli Board of Directors began renovation works, financially supported by the Barba family (in memory of Nino, long-time President of the Vercelli Section) and the Ferrero family (in memory of Luciano, a young mountaineer who passed away due to a serious illness), along with other private contributions. The renovation was completed in 1968, and the hut was inaugurated on September 1st. Since then, it has been known as Barba Ferrero Hut.
PASTORE HUT – BARBA FERRERO HUT
From Pastore Hut, you reach the vicinity of the Casa del Parco at Alpe Fum Biz, then continue following trail no. 7, entirely within the Alta Valsesia Natural Park, towards Barba Ferrero Hut.
For about an hour, the trail ascends gently, first through vegetation and then opening up along the river, offering stunning views of Monte Rosa and the surrounding rocky walls.
At certain points, the Sesia River is crossed, after which the trail becomes steeper, reaching the hut in approximately 1.5 hours. On clear days, it feels as if you are just steps away from the glacier and Regina Margherita Hut.
See the ASCENTS page for a partial list.
