The history of the Monte Rosa huts is the story of the courageous adventures of the CAI Varallo and the early pioneers of mountaineering, who crossed Alagna and the high Valsesia from the mid-19th century.
Born in the Belle Époque alpine era, with elegant ladies strolling with parasols in the villages and fearless climbers on the glaciers, these adventurers helped develop the valleys south of Monte Rosa, transforming the territory of Alagna and Riva into the “Chamonix of the Rosa”.
Margherita Hut was established in 1893, and Gnifetti Hut in 1876; their story continued throughout the 20th century with the CAI’s attention and care in renewing the facilities and the dedication of the people of Alagna, including guides and porters, to share the slow rhythm of the seasons in the mountains.
Today, the staff of Rifugi Monterosa Srl aims to convey the emotions we felt when we first reached Gnifetti Peak, when we gazed beyond the shadow of Lyskamm, listening to the music of the Rosa mists, while never forgetting where we come from.
We seek out open, uncluttered spaces, where silence is a value, everyday gestures are a privilege, and respect is a required skill.
